The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) and Admiral have announced the return of their £100,000 Sustainability in Sport Fund, following the success of its inaugural year.
Applications for the second round of funding will open on Monday 17 November, with full details available on the WSA website.
The fund offers WSA members the opportunity to apply for up to £25,000 to support projects that promote innovation and environmental action across the Welsh sport and leisure sector. Initiatives that focus on decarbonisation, waste reduction, biodiversity, community engagement and behavioural change are all eligible for consideration.
Admiral’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Michelle Leavesley, confirmed the continuation of the partnership during her address at the WSA Sustainability in Sport Conference.
She said: “We were blown away by the creativity and ambition of the projects submitted last year. From grassroots clubs to national governing bodies, the response demonstrated the sector’s commitment to environmental stewardship across Wales.
“That’s why we’re thrilled to continue our partnership with the WSA and Sustainability in Sport Fund for a second year. Through Admiral’s Green Impact Fund, we’re proud to support initiatives that are not only impactful and scalable but also inspire communities to take action.”
Successful applicants will be invited to present their projects at a Sustainability in Sport showcase day. Shortlisted initiatives will then pitch their ideas to a panel of judges at Admiral’s offices in early spring, competing for a share of the £100,000 fund.
The initiative builds on the momentum from last year’s winners, several of whom showcased their progress at this year’s conference. Among them were the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Wales, who presented updates on their Environmental Adventure Initiative, developed in collaboration with the BGC Wales Youth Forum to ensure it remains relevant and meaningful to younger generations.
The project aims to create Young Eco-Leaders, encouraging participants to apply what they’ve learned to their own communities and inspire local environmental action.
This year’s conference was hosted at Rodney Parade, home of Dragons RFC, one of last year’s grant recipients. The club used its funding to develop an Eco Hub from repurposed shipping containers, a community space designed to bring local groups together and provide resources for those interested in sustainability.
WSA CEO Andrew Howard said the partnership with Admiral is helping to drive lasting change across the sector.
He said: “We are excited to once again be bringing this significant funding into the sector to further positive practices and drive sustainable change across sport and leisure, and grateful to Admiral for making this happen.
“The success stories that we have already seen from last year’s funding, and heard about at the WSA Sustainability in Sport Conference, demonstrate the commitment from within the sector to make an impact for future generations.
“We are thoroughly looking forward to seeing yet more creativity and innovation from our Members, as we launch the second round of the Sustainability in Sport Fund.”
