A group of 18 employees from intellectual property firm Withers & Rogers honoured the memory of late colleague Matthew Gillard by completing a charity walk up Pen y Fan, raising £6,400 for two South Wales cancer charities.

The 4-mile trek to the summit of the highest peak in southern Britain took place on Thursday 5 June and paid tribute to Matthew, a partner and patent attorney at the firm’s Bristol office, who passed away in May 2024 following a long battle with cancer. A South Wales native and passionate hill walker, Matthew specialised in securing patent protection for innovations in computing, software, and electronics.

The funds raised will benefit Velindre Cancer Centre and St David’s Hospice Care, two local organisations providing vital specialist and palliative care to cancer patients across the region.

Jim Ribeiro, partner and patent attorney at Withers & Rogers, reflected on the emotional significance of the day: “Matt was a dear friend and colleague, and we miss him. The opportunity to do this charity walk in his memory was important to all of us. We’re very grateful to everyone who donated to support Matt’s chosen charities.”

The firm’s efforts highlight the strong sense of community among colleagues and their commitment to continuing Matthew’s legacy by supporting the causes he held dear.

Donations to support Velindre and St David’s Hospice Care in Matthew’s memory are still being accepted.
