Welsh Water has been shortlisted in three categories at the British Data Awards 2026 for its artificial intelligence-driven system, ORAI.

The tool, known as Operational Response Artificial Intelligence (ORAI), has been developed to support the company’s Operational Response & Control team in managing incidents across its 27,000km water network.

These incidents range from burst mains to supply interruptions, where speed and consistency of response are critical to minimising disruption for customers.

Created in partnership with technology firm FOILAI, ORAI analyses pressure alarms in real time, evaluates the potential impact on the network, and recommends appropriate response actions.

By combining live operational data with insights drawn from historical incidents, the system consolidates key information into a single platform, enabling faster and more informed decision-making.

The technology is designed to support earlier intervention and improve incident management by drawing on decades of operational experience.

Welsh Water says this approach allows its teams to respond more effectively while maintaining consistency across its network operations.

The project’s recognition at the British Data Awards 2026 includes nominations for ‘Agentic AI of the Year’ and ‘Innovation of the Year’.

In addition, Rhys Jones, product owner for ORAI, has been shortlisted for the ‘Rising Star of the Year’ award.

Emma Harris, Welsh Water’s Head of Planning, Response and Control, said: “We’re delighted to see ORAI shortlisted for the British Data Awards 2026.

“This recognition reflects our collaboration with FOILAI and our shared focus on using data and AI to improve operational decision-making.

“Ultimately, ORAI will help us deliver a more reliable service for our customers, in line with our vision of fostering thriving communities by providing world class water services.”

Rhys Jones, Welsh Water Operational Response Analyst, said: “Working on ORAI has been hugely rewarding and I’ve really appreciated the opportunity.

“This system provides consistent assessment and valuable insight, supporting our teams to respond more effectively.

“It’s an excellent example of how innovative AI can complement and strengthen the expertise of our operational teams.”
