The Welsh Government has announced an additional £31.5 million in funding to support town centre regeneration projects across Wales. This funding boost, confirmed at the end of the last financial year, brings the total investment for the 2024/25 period to an impressive £70 million.

The new funding will be allocated to nine local authorities to drive forward a series of transformative projects, including Y Storfa in Swansea, the Queen’s Market in Rhyl, and the demolition of Newport Leisure Centre. These projects are part of the ongoing effort to revitalize town centres, which are crucial to local economies and communities.

Supporting local economies and communities

Since its launch in 2020, the Transforming Towns Programme has committed more than £314 million in grant and loan funding to boost regeneration efforts across Wales. All 22 local authorities in Wales benefit from this programme, which aims to restore and revitalize public spaces and bring empty or underused buildings back into active use.

Jayne Bryant, Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, recently visited several regeneration projects in Llanelli that have benefitted from the programme. She praised the initiative’s impact, stating: “Projects like the YMCA or the library in Llanelli town centre are a fantastic example of how Transforming Town funding can be used to bring empty and underused buildings back into active use, revitalising public spaces. It’s so important that we continue to create places that serve the needs of local communities while celebrating their unique heritage and character.”

Local leaders welcome funding

Cllr Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, expressed gratitude for the continued support, noting that the funding has enabled the council to redevelop retail sites, housing, and community facilities in Ammanford, Carmarthen, and Llanelli town centres.

The Welsh Government has also secured budgets for future investment, with an additional £40 million set aside for the Transforming Towns Programme for 2025/26, further cementing its commitment to supporting vibrant, sustainable town centres across the nation.
