Twelve Welsh video game studios are set to share more than £580,000 in funding from Creative Wales, supporting the development of innovative games and immersive digital experiences for commercial release.
The Games Development Fund, which offers grants of between £10,000 and £50,000 per project, aims to help creative businesses turn new ideas into market-ready products while supporting long-term growth.
The latest round of funding will back studios across Wales with projects inspired by everything from Welsh mythology to virtual reality adventures.
“Thanks to the Development Fund, Rarebit Studios is doubling in size and launching an ambitious new Solitaire.io project,” said Gaz Thomas, from Rarebit Studios in Conwy.
“We’re proud to be creating world-class games from North Wales and Creative Wales’ support is helping us take it to another level!”
Cardiff continues to lead the way in digital innovation, with six studios in the capital receiving funding. Among them is Sugar Creative, known for its pioneering work in immersive storytelling and augmented reality.
“Securing support from Creative Wales has been transformative for Sugar Creative,” said Will Humphrey. “This funding has enabled us to push the boundaries of immersive storytelling and accelerate the development of a project with Hat Trick Productions and HTM Television, scaling our ambitions further. It’s more than just financial support; it’s a vote of confidence in our vision and in Wales as a hub for cutting-edge games innovation.”
The Minister for Creative, Jack Sargeant, visited Sugar Creative earlier this week to discuss its recent collaboration with global games giant Ubisoft on an educational app, Medieval Baghdad, which complements Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
“Wales has a proud tradition of storytelling and creativity, and these awards demonstrate how our digital creative sector is developing that in new and exciting ways,” he said.
“From immersive experiences that transport players to the Himalayas to games inspired by the Mabinogion, these projects showcase the innovation and talent we have right here in Wales.”
He added: “This investment is another part of our work to build Wales’ reputation as a leading destination for games development and helping our creative industries compete on the global stage.”
The Games Development Fund forms part of a wider Creative Wales package supporting the sector, including the Scale Up Fund, which recently awarded £850,000 to six Welsh companies, and international trade missions to major global events such as the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and Slush 2025.
