Business confidence across the UK rose in August, but regional performance remained uneven, according to the latest data from Lloyds’ Business Barometer.
London, the East of England, and the West Midlands recorded the strongest gains in sentiment, moving to the top of the regional rankings. Smaller increases were also reported in Scotland and the East Midlands.
However, confidence declined in seven other regions and nations, with the steepest falls in Yorkshire & the Humber, Wales and the North East. Despite the drop, Wales still ranked joint-third overall, suggesting its confidence levels remain comparatively strong.
The North East also maintained sentiment above the national average, underlining the resilience of businesses in the region.
Commenting on the findings, Paul Kempster, Managing Director for Commercial Banking Coverage at Lloyds Business & Commercial, said: “August’s figures show a build on business confidence. Opportunities continue to lie ahead for businesses, whether that be upskilling their workforce or exploring new markets. While confidence isn’t rising evenly across all sectors and regions, it’s encouraging to see positive sentiment holding well above the long-term average.”
