Cardiff’s five-star voco St. David’s Cardiff welcomed more than 100 pupils from six local secondary schools this week for a hands-on introduction to careers in hospitality, leisure and tourism.
Students from Fitzalan School, Ysgol Bro Morgannwg, Lliswerry High School, Cathays High School, Afon Taf High School and Ysgol Bro Pedr took part in a day of interactive workshops led by the hotel’s department heads.
The event was designed to showcase the skills, creativity and teamwork required to run one of Wales’s leading luxury hotels.
The initiative formed part of the Springboard Takeover programme, a national scheme run by the UK charity Springboard, which connects young people with real-world career experiences in the hospitality industry.
The programme aims to build confidence, spark curiosity, and open pathways to future training, apprenticeships and employment.
Throughout the day, students rotated through six hands-on workshops, each offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into hotel life. From towel artistry with the Housekeeping team to crafting edible creations in a Chocolate Workshop, participants were encouraged to think creatively and develop practical skills.
In the Food & Beverage sessions, students learned the art of mocktail making and tray service through a lively obstacle course, while the Spa team demonstrated hand massage techniques, highlighting the precision and care behind luxury guest experiences.
A Sales and Marketing challenge saw pupils design their own campaigns to promote the hotel, while the IHG Discovery Careers & Guidance workshop explored the variety of roles available across the industry from front-of-house to management and culinary careers.
“We’re so proud to host this event again this year and to see the enthusiasm from every student who took part,” said Tirion Canavan, Operations Manager at voco St. David’s Cardiff.
“Hospitality is all about people, creativity and teamwork — and it’s fantastic to see young people discovering how rewarding a career in this industry can be. The energy and curiosity they brought to each session was truly inspiring.”
After a lunch prepared by the hotel’s Tir a Môr restaurant, students were recognised for standout participation with certificates and small prizes.
Rebecca Slade, Programme Delivery Manager at Springboard, added: “Our mission is to help young people experience the incredible opportunities that exist within hospitality, leisure and tourism.
“Takeover Days like this one are an invaluable way for students to see how their skills and passions can translate into fulfilling careers. We’re delighted to work with voco St. David’s Cardiff once again to bring this to life.”
