A South Wales road safety initiative offering free and discounted soft drinks to designated drivers has been re-launched for the festive period, with more than 30 licensed premises already signed up across Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The DES Scheme, now in its fourth year, rewards customers who choose not to drink alcohol on a night out by giving them free draught soft drinks or squash.

The initiative aims to promote responsible drinking and reduce the risks associated with drink driving during one of the busiest times of the year for hospitality venues.

Designated drivers simply let bar staff know they are the ‘DES’ for the evening, after which they receive a wristband granting them access to the offer.

The exact terms, whether free drinks all night or a limited number, are set by each individual venue, which covers the cost. South Wales Police supplies participating pubs and bars with promotional posters and wristbands.

One of the largest operators taking part this year is Croeso Pubs Ltd, which has partnered with South Wales Police for the 2025 rollout.

Michael Haygarth, Area Director at Croeso Pubs, said the business is pleased to continue its involvement.

“We’re proud to partner with South Wales Police on the Des scheme for another year. It’s a very effective way to encourage responsible drinking and support safer nights out across our venues.

“If you’re the designated driver, we want to make your night just as enjoyable and giving you free soft drinks is one way we can say thank you.

“Christmas nights out should be fun for everyone, even the driver. By joining the DES scheme, we’re making sure the person getting everyone home safely is looked after too.

“Just let the team know you’re the ‘Des’ for the night and enjoy free soft drinks on us.”
