Rhys Thomas, chief executive of the Thomas Carroll Group, has been named a finalist for Employee Owner of the Year at the UK Employee Ownership Awards, marking a significant moment for the independent insurance, risk and insurtech group as it celebrates its second year operating as an employee ownership trust (EOT).
The national awards, run by the Employee Ownership Association (eoa), highlight businesses and leaders who champion effective employee ownership models and empower their workforces.
Winners are selected by a panel comprising previous eoa award recipients and the organisation’s chief executive, James de le Vigne. This year’s ceremony will take place at the eoa’s annual conference in late November.
Gareth Cotty, chief commercial officer at Thomas Carroll Group, said the nomination reflects the admiration felt within the organisation for its CEO.
He said: “As a second-generation family owner, Rhys led Thomas Carroll’s transition into employee ownership against the tide of our industry moving more and more into overseas ownership or private equity backed consolidators. I’m delighted that’s been recognised with this shortlisting.”
Rhys Thomas said: “Although it is very flattering to receive a nomination for an award like this, our transition into employee ownership really was a team effort, so it feels very odd to be the one singled out.
“Our financial results for last year, our first full year operating as an EOT, saw the Group turnover increase by 7.1%, I believe this demonstrates the success of the strategic investment we made into our future as an employee-led organisation.”
