Six Wales-based video game developers are set to receive a combined £850,000 in funding from the Welsh Government, as part of a pioneering initiative designed to accelerate the growth of the country’s gaming industry.

The Games Scale Up Fund for Wales, launched earlier this year by Creative Wales in partnership with the UK Games Fund, aims to help developers expand pilot projects into commercially viable games with greater scope and international reach. It marks the first fund of its kind in the region specifically focused on scaling the games sector.

The six studios awarded funding are:

  • Cloth Cat
  • COPA Gaming
  • Goldborough Studios
  • Rocket Science
  • Sugar Creative
  • Wales Interactive

The funding announcement follows a successful trade mission to the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco in March, where five of the six companies showcased their work at the Cymru Wales stand. The event offered exposure to major publishers, investors, and collaborators from across the global games industry.

Osian Williams, Director at COPA Gaming, said the investment offers both momentum and validation.

“Being backed by the Welsh Government through this scale-up funding isn’t just a headline for us—it’s a true game changer. It gives our team the confidence and resources to grow sustainably and to proudly create uniquely Welsh games for a global audience.”

UK Games Fund CEO Paul Durrant, whose organisation managed the application process, praised the depth of talent across the Welsh games industry.

“This fund has given us a window into the exceptional creative and technical ability in Wales. It’s been a pleasure to support Creative Wales in helping these studios progress.”

Jack Sargeant, Minister for Culture, said the funding is part of a broader vision to position Wales as a key player in the international gaming landscape.

“Wales has an incredibly talented and ambitious video games industry that’s making its mark globally. This investment will help homegrown studios level up and reach wider audiences. I was genuinely impressed by the Welsh developers I met at GDC—the creativity and innovation they’re showing is world-class.”

Creative Wales continues to support the sector with additional opportunities, including its Games Development Fund, which offers grants of £10,000 to £50,000 for early-stage commercial games projects. That fund closes to applications on Thursday, 5 June.

The Welsh Government sees the creative industries as a key area for economic growth, and this latest announcement reflects a sustained commitment to nurturing local talent and innovation.
