In just five years, Sam Fire Doors UK Ltd has grown from a one-man operation into one of the UK’s most trusted names in fire safety — protecting everything from private homes to major public sector buildings. Founded by director Sam Mathias, the company’s success is built on a simple philosophy: safety comes first.
“I was a carpenter by trade,” Sam explains. “After I qualified, I started working as a sub-contractor and worked on a few fire doors projects. From there, I noticed a gap in the market for a fire protection company that solely specialised in the installation and maintenance of fire doors so I took the leap of setting up my own company – that’s how Sam Fire Doors began.”
The fire door industry carries a unique responsibility: lives can depend on whether the job is done properly. “I’ve learned that safety comes first, especially in the fire door industry,” Sam says. “It’s about doing everything right, in full compliance with regulations, and making sure the job is done properly every time.”
That responsibility has only grown since the Grenfell tragedy, which transformed fire safety regulation and enforcement. “Since then, a lot has changed in terms of compliance,” Sam notes. “New laws are there to protect everyone — the general public, homeowners, and building operators. It’s not just about insurance; it’s about keeping people safe.”
Stricter regulations have driven demand for installations that meet the latest legal and manufacturer standards. Building owners, developers, and contractors now have clear legal obligations to ensure their premises are compliant.
Sam Fire Doors UK was ready for that challenge. “We never set out to grow as quickly as we have,” says Sam. “But as regulations have evolved, there’s been more work — and our commitment to quality has fuelled our growth.”
Today, the company operates nationwide, delivering for public sector contracts, private developments, and individual homeowners. Clients include major Student accommodation providers and schools, the NHS, and Frank Rogers. “It’s not all about big commercial companies,” Sam says. “We want to make fire safety a priority across the UK — whether you’re a single homeowner or a large organisation.”
Transparency is a key differentiator. “We don’t just show the finished product,” Sam explains. “We share evidence that every stage of our work is compliant. That gives people peace of mind that it’s been done right from start to finish.”
That trust matters — especially in a field where safety is often overlooked until disaster strikes. “Buildings need to be safe before anything happens,” Sam stresses.
While some assume fire doors cost “thousands upon thousands,” Sam says that’s not always the case. Prices vary depending on specification, from high-end oak finishes to more cost-effective compliant models. “It’s not about how much you spend,” he says. “It’s about protecting lives.”
And for certain buildings — such as apartment blocks, hospitals, and student accommodation — compliance means more than just buying a fire-rated door from a DIY store. “A properly certified fire door is tested as a complete set — frame, door, and ironmongery — and must carry third-party accreditation. At Sam Fire Doors UK we offer a full accreditation service.” Sam explains.
With regulations here to stay and awareness on the rise, Sam Firedoors is set for continued growth. “As fire safety standards improve, we’ll keep delivering a first-class, fully compliant service — with the same aim we’ve had since day one: to keep people safe.”
