The Royal Mint has reported a record-breaking year for precious metals investment, as demand for silver surged and online sales of bullion products reached all-time highs.

During 2025, online sales of gold, silver and platinum on royalmint.com rose sharply compared with 2024.

The final quarter of the year proved particularly strong, with October to December marking the busiest trading period on record.

Compared with the same period in 2024, gold sales rose by 144%, silver sales surged by 526% and platinum increased by 332%.

In October, the value of a single gram of gold passed £100 for the first time, while a kilogram gold bar, roughly the size of an iPhone, exceeded £100,000 in value.

Customer spending across both physical and digital precious metal assets reached record levels in 2025, rising by 150% year-on-year.

First-time buyers accounted for 62% of all bullion customers during the year.

Buying activity significantly outweighed selling, with seven customers buying gold for every one selling it in the final quarter, while silver saw a ratio of fifteen buyers to every seller.

Stuart O’Reilly, Private Wealth Consultant at The Royal Mint, said: “Whilst gold continued its rally in 2025, silver was undoubtedly the stand-out performer with prices finishing the year up 132% in GBP.

“This momentum has continued into 2026, as geopolitical uncertainty and concerns around supplies of precious metals have encouraged further price hikes.

“Over the last year, we have seen exceptional demand from investors, and, at times, this has outpaced supply.

“We’ve introduced new security features to some of our products to give our customers added confidence as prices remain elevated.”
