Hospitals across North Wales are set to receive state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment as part of a £4.4 million investment from the Welsh Government.

The funding will deliver new x-ray, fluoroscopy and mammography systems to Colwyn Bay, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Wrexham Maelor and Ysbyty Gwynedd hospitals. The equipment promises sharper image quality, lower radiation exposure for patients, and improved ease of use for NHS staff.

At Colwyn Bay Hospital and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, older x-ray machines will be replaced with updated digital radiology systems, which are fully automated for positioning and designed to improve accuracy and comfort for staff.

Meanwhile, Wrexham Maelor Hospital and Ysbyty Gwynedd will receive new fluoroscopy systems, essential for procedures such as biopsies, drainages, and reviewing swallowing functions. These will increase reliability and capacity within radiology departments.

Both hospitals will also benefit from upgraded mammography imaging equipment, vital for breast cancer detection and other breast disease diagnoses.

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles, said: “This shows our commitment to replacing older equipment with new systems which are easier to use, better quality, more reliable and improve productivity and efficiency.

“These new machines will be easier for staff to use and provide them with better tools to help diagnose a wide range of conditions, including cancer.

“We are ensuring hospitals all over Wales have equipment they need to see, diagnose and treat more people, as we speed up diagnosis and reduce waiting times.”

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s deputy executive medical director, Jim McGuigan, welcomed the investment.

He said: “We are grateful for this investment in new diagnostic equipment across multiple health board sites.

“It will help our staff provide a more comprehensive and efficient service, through the use of improved technologies.

“We all have the same goal of reducing waiting times for diagnosis and treatment. This new equipment will help us on that journey.”

The investment forms part of the Welsh Government’s Better Health priorities, aimed at modernising healthcare infrastructure, improving efficiency and cutting waiting times.
