NFU Cymru, in partnership with Wynnstay Group PLC, has officially launched the 2025 Sustainable Agriculture Award, celebrating the vital role Welsh farmers play in delivering sustainability across the nation’s rural landscape. Now in its fifth year, the award aims to spotlight farmers who exemplify excellence in sustainable agricultural practices.

Open to entries from across Wales, the award recognises farms or individuals making exceptional contributions to the economic, environmental, social, and cultural well-being of the country. Alongside a £500 cash prize, the winner will receive a commemorative accolade. The deadline for nominations is Monday, 1st September 2025.

The judging panel will look for entrants who can demonstrate:

  • A strong commitment to producing high-quality food to world-class standards
  • Positive action in protecting and enhancing the farmed environment
  • Active involvement in supporting the rural economy, community life, and Welsh cultural heritage

NFU Cymru Rural Affairs Board Chairman Hedd Pugh emphasised the importance of the award in recognising the broad and often underappreciated impact of Welsh farming.

“Welsh farmers make an unparalleled contribution to the economic, environmental, social and cultural well-being of Wales,” said Pugh. “They produce food to world-leading standards while managing over 80% of the land area in Wales—safeguarding and enhancing our natural landscapes.

“They are also central to the rural economy, to our communities, and to the preservation of the Welsh language and cultural identity.”

The award is open to self-nominations as well as nominations from friends, family members, or organisations. Forms can be completed via the NFU Cymru website.

Backed by Wynnstay Group PLC, the initiative continues to champion a sector often at the forefront of balancing productivity with sustainability. It highlights the efforts of farmers not only as food producers, but as stewards of the environment and pillars of rural life in Wales.
