A £432,000 investment from the Welsh Government is set to help ZF Automotive UK Ltd create and safeguard over 60 jobs at its Pontypool facility — while securing a major new contract with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

The funding, awarded through the Welsh Government’s Economy Futures Fund, will support the global car parts supplier in upgrading a key production line for the JLR contract. Known for manufacturing brake callipers, ZF Automotive’s Pontypool site plays a pivotal role in the firm’s supply chain to major automotive brands worldwide.

As part of the upgrade, the company will boost productivity and invest in workforce development — including opportunities for apprentices and graduates. The investment will also fund the replacement of the site’s ageing gas heating system, which is over 50 years old, significantly improving the plant’s energy efficiency and reducing its carbon emissions.

Steven McKenzie, Director of Operations at ZF Automotive UK Ltd, welcomed the funding:
“Our team in Pontypool is passionately working to continually improve our manufacturing operations to remain competitive in a challenging automotive sector.
“This support will enable us to invest in the equipment and tooling needed to secure new business, while also modernising our heating system to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.”

Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, said:
“ZF Automotive is a well-established and important employer for Pontypool and the wider area, with many long-serving staff.
“The funding will help the business decarbonise and optimise its operations — securing high-value contracts with Jaguar Land Rover and supporting the upskilling of its workforce in the process.”

The investment forms part of the Welsh Government’s broader strategy to support sustainable growth in advanced manufacturing, decarbonisation, and skills development across Wales.
