Monmouthshire Building Society will run a cybersecurity awareness event at its Cardiff high street branch on Friday 31 October, aiming to help customers protect themselves from online scams as digital fraud continues to surge across the UK.
The initiative forms part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month and will be delivered by the Society’s Information Security team alongside representatives from Tarian, the regional organised crime unit for southern Wales. Visitors will be offered practical advice on spotting suspicious activity and staying safe while banking online.
Matthew Didcott, Information Security Officer at Monmouthshire Building Society, said: “The aim of the event isn’t to spook customers but to demonstrate and educate people on safe online banking practices and secure digital payment methods.
“This event provides an opportunity for our customers to learn how to spot scams like unsolicited emails, texts and phone calls and will give practical help and advice so customers can protect their personal information. We will also show them how to use things such as multi-factor authentication to provide extra security beyond a password.”
Online fraud remains a growing threat. One in ten UK adults reportedly fell victim to cyber scams last year, losing an average of £1,443 each, with older people particularly affected. More than 1.8 million over-65s are estimated to have been targeted.
Phishing attacks remain the most common tactic, using fake emails and text messages to lure individuals into revealing personal details or clicking harmful links. The National Crime Agency estimates that 67% of UK fraud is now cyber-enabled, although 71% of victims do not report incidents due to embarrassment or uncertainty.
Matthew added: “Awareness is key. Using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication can stop most attacks. If something feels wrong, don’t click, don’t share, and don’t pay.
“Always check with us at Monmouthshire Building Society, or your banking provider, if you’re unsure. It won’t take long and will be worth the check. If in doubt, report!”
The event runs between 10am and 5pm and is open to both members and the general public without the need to book. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enter a prize draw by taking part in a cybersecurity quiz.
