Mentera launches Cyfle+ to support new routes into employment across Wales

Mentera has launched a new paid work experience programme aimed at helping people across Wales overcome barriers to employment.

The initiative, Cyfle+, offers 200 hours of paid work experience alongside training and structured mentoring, with a focus on individuals’ potential rather than formal experience or qualifications.

Each intake will provide up to five placements, enabling tailored support and one-to-one mentoring for participants.

The programme is targeted at groups that often face challenges entering the workforce, including people aged 20–24 not in employment, education or training, those over 50, disabled individuals, people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, women, particularly lone parents, carers, and those without a history of regular paid employment.

Eirwen Williams, Director of Service Delivery (Rural) at Mentera, said: “We know that many people have the skills, motivation and ambition to work, but that traditional recruitment routes don’t always work for everyone.

“Cyfle+ is about offering real support, practical experience and flexibility so that people can move forward with confidence.”

Participants will gain experience across different teams within Farming Connect, as well as access to employability training such as CV development and interview skills.

The scheme also includes mentoring support and opportunities to develop Welsh language skills in a workplace setting.

Flexible working arrangements and accessible recruitment processes form part of the programme’s design, including alternative application methods and adaptable interview options.

Carys Evans, a previous participant, said: “My time with Cyfle provided invaluable opportunities that solidified my desire to pursue a career within the Welsh agricultural industry.

“The hands-on farm visits across Wales were exceptional, and being part of such a dynamic team was a truly rewarding experience.”
