FinTech Wales has announced global payments giant Mastercard as its newest Partner, marking a significant boost for Wales’ rapidly growing fintech sector.

The independent membership association, which champions fintech and financial services across the nation, said the move would bring Mastercard’s global expertise, advanced technology and network of industry connections to its 180-strong membership community.

With a long-standing commitment to fostering innovation, Mastercard has built a track record of supporting early-stage and scaling fintechs through partnerships, investment and infrastructure. The company said its approach focuses on making payments inclusive, secure and sustainable, while opening access to a worldwide network of customers, partners and technical capabilities.

The partnership will give FinTech Wales members access to Mastercard’s deep experience in financial services, offering new opportunities for collaboration, knowledge-sharing and business growth.

Sarah Jones, CMO of FinTech Wales, said: “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Mastercard as a partner in our mission to champion the thriving Welsh fintech ecosystem. Their global expertise, collaborative mindset, and commitment to digital innovation make them a perfect fit for our community. This partnership represents a significant opportunity to accelerate growth, foster innovation, and create new opportunities for fintechs across Wales.”

Mastercard said the decision to join as a Partner reflects its broader commitment to strengthening the UK’s fintech ecosystem. The company plans to engage with all key stakeholders, from policymakers and regulators to startups and scaleups — to help shape the future of payments and financial technology.

FinTech Wales said Mastercard’s membership comes at a time of strong momentum for the sector in Wales, with increasing numbers of high-growth fintech firms choosing to base operations in the country.

The association has built a strong roster of corporate partners, including Admiral, Barclays, Aviva, Starling Bank, Hodge Bank, Principality and Monmouthshire Building Societies, Confused.com, Go.Compare, The Royal Mint, Veeqo and Future Finance.

By joining this group, Mastercard is signalling its intent to work closely with fintech innovators in Wales to develop products and services that can scale nationally and internationally.

Founded in April 2019, FinTech Wales uses what it calls “the power of the collective voice” to influence policymakers, governments and key decision-makers in the financial services industry. Its mission is to make Wales a world leader in the global fintech community, bringing together entrepreneurs, technology suppliers, universities, public sector bodies and businesses of all sizes to collaborate and share resources.

The association also runs accelerator programmes, industry events and skills initiatives aimed at strengthening the talent pipeline for Welsh fintechs.

With Mastercard now on board, FinTech Wales says it is well-positioned to further accelerate innovation and attract global investment into the region’s fintech economy.
