Clean energy company MarineSolar Energy Solutions has completed a pilot trial of its NanoDeck photovoltaic energy system aboard a vessel owned by Rio Tinto as part of efforts to develop lower-emission power solutions for the maritime sector.

The non-commercial trial took place on RTM Cook and tested MarineSolar’s NanoDeck system in operational marine conditions over several months at sea.

The company said the technology is designed to provide retrofittable renewable power for vessels both at sea and in port, helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower fuel consumption.

According to MarineSolar, the system continued operating and transmitting data despite exposure to high winds and heavy seas during the trial. Early findings indicated the technology could support onboard renewable energy generation and contribute to carbon reduction targets for ship operators.

Nigel Marc Roberts, chief executive of MarineSolar Energy Solutions, said: “The opportunity to trial our technology on a working carrier has been invaluable for evaluating the system in real-world conditions. The data we’ve gathered will inform the next phase of our technology development.”
