Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council (DVSC) is undergoing a new change in management as Janine Downing succeeds Tom Barham and brings in 16 years of experience to the Chief Officer role.
DVSC are a multi-service charity and membership body, based in Ruthin, that commit their work to the voluntary and community sector.
They provide training, advice, funding, and much more including community initiatives that have shaped development across the area such as regeneration strategies.
Due to the collaborative nature of DVSC’s work, they have worked with many different partners including local charities, voluntary organisations, Denbighshire County Council and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.
Downing has over a decade of experience working in a similar capacity, spending a significant time of her career at Wales Council for Voluntary Action.
There, she held several senior roles, led national programmes, and worked closely with their community and voluntary partners.
Tom Barham is passing the torch to Janine, serving as Chief Officer at the DVSC from 2021, bearing the difficult task of recovering Denbighshire’s community sector after the Covid-19 pandemic.
During his time at DVSC, Tom was integral to the aforementioned community initiatives such as the £2 million Denbighshire Key Fund but also played an important role in projects that tackled social isolation and regenerated the community.
Janine said: “I’m incredibly proud, DVSC is an amazing organisation that does so much to support community groups, charities and volunteers in Denbighshire,” she said.
“We already have a committed and passionate team here, and I’m excited to build on the strong foundations already in place.”
“My priority is making sure we are providing what the sector needs to be able to flourish,” said Janine.
“I will be making sure I am out meeting charities and community groups to hear directly from them to understand their needs. Anyone can get in touch – we are here for you.”
Tom said: “Janine has an outstanding track record as a strong voice for the third sector. She brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and passion for community work, and I have no doubt she will lead the team with energy and vision. I wish her every success in the role.”
