A new bus service linking communities between Rhyl and Wrexham has been launched today as part of the Welsh Government’s plans to strengthen public transport across the region.
The TrawsCymru T51, operated by Arriva, will replace the existing 51/X51 service and deliver more frequent connections between Rhyl, Denbigh, Ruthin and Wrexham.
Under the changes, buses between Ruthin and Wrexham will now run hourly instead of every two hours, while a new hourly Sunday service between Wrexham and Rhyl has also been introduced.
The T51 forms part of the Network North Wales programme, which aims to provide better integrated bus and rail services across the region, alongside improved ticketing and simplified fares.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said: “I’m pleased to see the start of better connectivity in this part of Wales starts today thanks to our work on Network North Wales.
“Improving public transport is the key to unlocking the potential of the region and this new TrawsCymru service offering more frequent buses is a great example of that.”
Transport for Wales said the launch marks an early milestone in its long-term plans to transform travel across North Wales.
Lee Robinson, Executive Director for Regional Transport and Integration at Transport for Wales, said: “The T51 is an early milestone for Network North Wales, showing how better coordinated bus and rail services will open up opportunities across the region.
“The new service will help transform travel in North Wales giving people more frequent and convenient connections between Rhyl, Denbigh, Ruthin and Wrexham.
“Better frequencies, simpler fares and improved ticketing make public transport a genuine everyday option for more people, supporting local jobs and education.”
As part of the upgrade, passengers will also benefit from simpler, lower fares and digital ticketing options.
Work on the wider Network North Wales programme will continue, with the T51 route set to integrate further with rail services and other TrawsCymru routes from March 2026. A new fleet of modern, sustainable vehicles is also planned, designed to improve comfort and reduce environmental impact.
