Leading insurance group Howden has raised £3,000 in support of two local charities—Wales Ape Sanctuary and Maggie’s Cancer Care—at its inaugural South Wales Golf Day, held at Machynys Golf Club in Llanelli.
The event, hosted by Howden’s Cardiff and Swansea branches, welcomed 100 guests from across the region for a day of sport, entertainment, and charitable giving.
As a Principal Partner of the British & Irish Lions, Howden added star power to the day’s proceedings with the attendance of Lions Ambassador and former Scotland and Lions captain Gavin Hastings. Hastings shared reflections on the honour of wearing the iconic red jersey and offered a preview of the upcoming 2025 Qatar Airways Lions Men’s Tour to Australia.
Also taking centre stage was Adrian Davies, former Welsh professional squash player, who hosted the day’s activities and ensured a smooth and lively flow to the programme.
The event kicked off with a breakfast and golf briefing before participants took to the course for an 18-hole competition. The day concluded with dinner, prize presentations, and a Q&A session with Hastings.
Gary Stevens, Regional Managing Director at Howden, described the event as a huge success.
“What a fantastic day we had at our inaugural golf day. Thank you to everyone who supported our event, whether through attendance or donations, and of course to Gavin and Adrian for leading the event and ensuring everyone was well looked after,” he said.
“It’s a great privilege to be able to give back to our local charities, and it was wonderful to see so many people supporting the work of both Maggie’s and Wales Ape Sanctuary. Maggie’s is a charity close to the hearts of a lot of us at Howden, doing incredible work supporting people across south Wales and nationally. We’re also proud to help the Wales Ape Sanctuary in their mission to provide specialist care and lifelong homes for rescued animals.”
The fundraising golf day follows earlier efforts by the Howden Wales team in support of Maggie’s. Earlier this year, 30 staff from Howden’s Corporate & Commercial division took part in a daring Wing Walking challenge, raising over £40,000. The south Wales team was represented by Deborah Barber in that effort.
The event reaffirmed Howden’s commitment to supporting its communities and making a tangible difference through charitable initiatives across Wales.
