Global biotechnology company Genesis Biosciences has joined forces with consumer goods giant Unilever to develop probiotic cleaning products designed to reshape the way households approach hygiene.
The partnership, part of Unilever’s Partner with Purpose programme, focuses on using microbial technology to deliver longer-lasting, environmentally friendly cleaning solutions. Genesis, recognised as one of Europe’s most innovative microbial developers, has already been awarded the Unilever Clean Future Partner Award for its role in advancing sustainable cleaning science.
Its technology is set to feature in some of Unilever’s best-known global brands, with the first major consumer launch already on shelves: the Cif Infinite Clean All-in-One Cleaner Spray. The new surface cleaner incorporates probiotics from Genesis to provide continuous cleanliness for up to 72 hours.
The formulation reflects both companies’ focus on sustainability, using environmentally conscious ingredients and aligning with cruelty-free, vegan principles as well as Genesis’ eco-benign® ethos.
“The partnership marks a significant step forward in the use of microbial technologies in mainstream cleaning products,” said Dr Emma Saunders, General Manager of Genesis Biosciences.
“Probiotic cleaning isn’t just a trend; it’s a science-backed approach that offers extended action beyond the initial application.
“Following the success of our previous probiotic launches around the world, we’re proud to see our strains being utilised in this new product, harnessing the power of beneficial bacteria. We are continuing to research, develop and test formulations for future products as part of our strategic partnership with Unilever to transform home cleaning in a safe and environmentally responsible way.”
The collaboration underpins Unilever’s Bright Future strategy, which aims to apply science and technology to create sustainable, superior consumer products.
The Cif Infinite Clean launch follows earlier joint projects between the two companies, including the Wipol Bioshield and Sunlight Floor Cleaners in Indonesia, the Vim UltraPro Floor Cleaners in India, and the Handy Andy Professional Multi-Surface and Floor Cleaner for South Africa’s professional cleaning market.
Eduardo Campanella, President of Unilever Home Care, said: “Through this partnership, we’re challenging traditional cleaning norms and creating truly disruptive products. To unlock the future of cleaning, we’re bringing together Unilever’s focus on sustainable innovation with Genesis’ expertise in probiotic technology to develop safe, natural products.”
