GE Aerospace is set to invest £19 million to overhaul and modernise its Nantgarw site, marking the largest injection of capital into the facility in more than 20 years.
The three-year refurbishment programme, unveiled at the Wales Investment Summit, aims to strengthen the plant’s long-term role as a global hub for commercial engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO).
The investment will fund extensive upgrades across more than 70,000 square feet of roof space, along with improvements to building cladding, insulation and glazing.
GE says the modernisation will enhance operational efficiency, cut energy use and support new renewable energy opportunities on site.
Stephen Edwards, Managing Director & Executive Plant Leader at GE Aerospace Wales, said: “This investment reflects GE Aerospace’s commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.
“By modernising our infrastructure, we are not only enhancing our capabilities but also creating opportunities to support the next generation of engines and renewable energy projects.
“This investment secures the future of global operations right here in Wales, the gateway to the European aerospace market.”
The upgrade represents the biggest commitment to the Nantgarw plant since the construction of its widebody Test Cell facility in 1999.
The site is regarded as one of Wales’ Anchor Companies, employing more than 1,350 highly skilled engineers and technical specialists.
It supports a global customer base and operates an award-winning apprenticeship programme, with 43 apprentices currently training in partnership with Coleg y Cymoedd.
The First Minister of Wales, Eluned Morgan MS, said: “I’m delighted that GE Aerospace has made this long-term commitment to its Nantgarw site and announced it at the Welsh Government’s Wales Investment Summit today.
“The plant has been a central part of the economy of South Wales for years, providing high quality jobs for generations of Welsh workers.
“This investment by GE Aerospace is a major vote of confidence in Wales and is great news for the local community, the local supply chain and especially the staff – not just the current workforce, but the workforce of the future.”
The project forms part of GE Aerospace’s wider European investment strategy.
In October 2024, the company outlined plans to invest more than £107 million across its European MRO and component repair facilities through 2026, as it prepares for rising global demand and the next generation of aviation technologies.
