Former Wales football star Gareth Bale has said the consortium he leads has submitted a “great offer” in its bid to buy his hometown football club, Cardiff City.

Speaking to Front Office Sports Today, Bale revealed that a second bid has been made for the club and that his aim is to “turn Cardiff into the club we know it can be.”

The Bluebirds were relegated to League One for the first time in more than 20 years, following several seasons of flirting with a drop into the third tier.

The Welsh capital-based side have enjoyed two stints in the top flight under the ownership of Malaysian businessman Vincent Tan, but fans have become increasingly frustrated with the club’s hierarchy.

He said: “It’s exciting news. We have a brand-new offer on the table, which has recently been submitted.

“We think it’s a great offer, one we believe is very fair, if not more than fair, and it’s something we hope the current owners will take seriously.

“We’d love for them to accept so we can take full control and get on with what we want to do: turn Cardiff into the club we know it can be.”

Bale, who retired from professional football in 2023, has increasingly focused on business and sports ventures. Cardiff City had publicly pursued Bale’s signature before his move to LAFC, shortly before he hung up his boots.

While Bale has never worn the blue shirt of Cardiff as a player, having come through the academy at Southampton before starring for Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid, he has never shied away from being a proud Cardiffian.

Widely regarded as the greatest Welsh footballer of all time, Bale’s global profile would be a major asset in any prospective leadership role at the club, should the deal materialise.

Bale would join a growing list of former superstar footballers who have turned to club ownership in retirement, including his former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modrić, now a minority owner of Cardiff’s bitter rivals, Swansea City

In a later interview with ESPN, Bale continued: “We are interested in trying to take over Cardiff. We have actually put in a great new offer that we hope we can get feedback [on].

“We think it’s a very good offer for where the club is at. It’s kind of out of our hands now and we are looking forward to seeing what develops with that.

“Things are exciting and I’m looking forward to what the future holds.”
