When former Welsh international and Cardiff Blues fly-half Nick Robinson stepped away from the professional rugby world, few would have predicted his next move would be into the world of insurance.
But today, as co-founder and director of Robinson Sargeant Insurance Brokers, Robinson is applying the same dedication and team-first approach that made him a standout player to a new field—offering high-quality, relationship-driven insurance services across construction, property, and bespoke private client packages.
It’s a journey that began unexpectedly. After retiring from rugby, Robinson found himself working with Allianz Insurance on events, hosting Q&As and meet-and-greets around big matches. That led to an introduction to a broker who invited him to explore the business more deeply.
“I actually fell into the insurance industry via Allianz Insurance… I started doing some business development work with them and then fast forward five years and felt that the time was right to go and do something by myself.”
That “something” became Robinson Sargeant, founded in April 2024 alongside a like-minded former colleague. Since then, the Magor-based firm has grown steadily, adding James Weekes as Head of Construction in December and, most recently, launching a dedicated property division.
“There are three key areas to the business really: construction, property, and private clients—so anybody that needs a bit more bespoke insurance for their property, their cars, or their valuables. We can hopefully help them with that more personal service.”
And that’s what Robinson Sargeant is built on—personalised, human-first service, tailored to each client’s individual needs. In an industry dominated by faceless corporates and price-driven online platforms, Robinson believes people are ready for something different.
“It’s about growing a relationship and for people to trust what you can offer them… It’s something that everybody needs, and a vital part of any business is getting that correct. If we can make that more of a friendly approach, we’re on the end of the phone if things go wrong, or if any help or advice is needed.”
Their success has already gained recognition. The firm has been nominated for three national insurance awards, including Community Broker of the Year—a reflection of its values and its strong roots in South Wales.
“We’ve actually been nominated for three awards within the industry, which has been brilliant. I’m really excited and proud to be nominated among some big global insurance brokers… It’s great recognition that we are doing the right things.”
The community focus isn’t just branding—it’s baked into Robinson Sargeant’s DNA. From helping fast-growing local businesses manage risk as they scale, to giving back to regional charities like the Cardiff Rugby Foundation, Robinson is passionate about making a meaningful impact.
“We’ve got some great clients in South Wales that have grown significantly in that 12-month period that we’ve been with them… It’s great to be able to support charities like the Cardiff Rugby Foundation. That work is really close to my heart.”
And just as rugby taught him the importance of teamwork, Robinson is now investing in the next generation. The company is looking to open doors for young people exploring alternatives to university, offering them a hands-on taste of the insurance world.
“We’ve got some interest from people finishing school who maybe don’t fancy uni life… If we can offer them an opportunity to see what the insurance industry looks like, then there could be opportunities to grow together.”
For Robinson, success doesn’t just mean signing new clients—it means delivering value, building trust, and being the kind of broker people want in their corner.
“We always believe in getting the right policy for the right client. Sometimes there might be people cheaper down the road who could do that. But we always believe that the service we offer and the value that we can give a business is going to be the best that we can offer.”
From Allianz boardrooms to construction sites, and from rugby stadiums to high-net-worth households, Robinson Sargeant is proving that in business, just like in sport, the fundamentals matter: trust, teamwork, and putting the client first.
