A historic Chepstow pub is being brought back to life by former professional footballer Darren Jones and his wife Lucia, who are leading a major transformation of the former White Lion on Bank Street.

Now renamed the Lion Lounge, the venue, which dates back to at least 1644, is being repurposed as a multi-use hospitality destination comprising a traditional pub, a live events space, and a gourmet burger restaurant.

Jones, whose 17-year football career included spells at Newport County, Bristol City, Forest Green Rovers, and Shrewsbury Town, has teamed up with Lucia and business partners Jevgenyij Inozemcev and Viktoria Gaspar to breathe new life into the long-closed premises.

Having already found success with the Castle Inn in Caldicot, and previously running the Golden Lion in Magor, the couple hopes to replicate their formula for success in Chepstow.

“The pub has been closed for a few years and had a bad reputation, but before that, it was packed every weekend,” said Darren.

“That’s what we want to get back to we think we can offer something for everyone here.”

Partnering with local promoters Honest Dog, the team aims to position the Lion Lounge as a key nightlife and entertainment hub, attracting audiences from Newport, Bristol, and beyond.

The Live Lounge will officially open on Saturday, June 28, with a DJ set from Jonre, followed by a headline performance by Newport favourites Joe Kelly and Royal Pharmacy on Friday, July 4.

“As well as our weekday opening hours, there will be something happening every weekend — whether it’s music, comedy or private functions,” said Darren.

The venue is also available for private hire, including corporate events and training sessions, with bespoke catering available in addition to the burger bar.

Paul Divers of Honest Dog Promotions, a local music promoter with over 15 years of experience touring with punk and reggae acts, praised the initiative.

“Chepstow is really picking up as an entertainment destination thanks to people like Darren and Lucia,” he said.
“I love this town and want to give something back to the area.”

With a fresh identity and ambitious vision, the Lion Lounge team is confident they can restore the venue to its former status as one of Chepstow’s go-to social spots.

“We know the market is there to bring this place back to its glory days,” added Darren.
