FleetEV launches platform to identify which fleet vehicles should go electric

Cardiff-based FleetEV and sister company PLUG Charging have launched a new platform designed to help organisations identify which vehicles in their fleets are suitable for electrification and when they should make the switch.

Called Switch, the platform analyses individual vehicles using existing telematics data, including daily mileage, duty cycles, dwell times and usage patterns. FleetEV says this allows operators to develop an evidence-led electrification plan rather than relying on fleet averages or assumptions about vehicle use.

Switch categorises vehicles according to whether they are suitable to move to electric now, should be considered for a later switch, or are currently better suited to their existing vehicle or fuel type.

The platform also models potential electric replacements and provides whole-life and running cost comparisons, alongside estimated operating cost and CO2 savings.

Where vehicles are identified as suitable for electrification, FleetEV can support procurement and supply, while PLUG Charging provides charging infrastructure design, installation and operation. The companies say this creates a single service covering fleet analysis, vehicle supply and charging infrastructure.

The same telematics data is used to assess where vehicles stop, how long they remain there and the likely mix of home, workplace and public charging. This is intended to help organisations plan infrastructure investment around the actual requirements of their fleets.

Jarrad Morris, Founder and CEO of FleetEV, said: “Fleet managers are being asked to make major decisions about vehicles and charging, but the information available to them is not always reliable or detailed enough. Decisions based on averages and assumptions can be expensive and disruptive when they do not reflect how individual vehicles are used.

“Electrification should not be about trying to convince an organisation that every vehicle needs to become electric immediately. Switch gives organisations clear evidence on which vehicles can switch now, which should switch later and, importantly, which should stay as they are for the time being.

“By combining that analysis with vehicle supply from FleetEV and charging delivery from PLUG Charging, we can support the whole transition rather than handing customers a report and leaving them to work out what happens next.”

The launch comes as the UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate increases the proportion of manufacturers’ new registrations that must be zero emission. The 2026 targets are 33% for cars and 24% for vans, rising to 80% and 70% respectively by 2030.

While the mandate applies to vehicle manufacturers rather than fleet operators, FleetEV said changing vehicle markets, organisations’ carbon targets and vehicle replacement cycles mean fleets need to prepare for future vehicle and charging requirements.

Switch provides a live view of EV readiness across a fleet, including the proportion of vehicles that are ready to switch, projected running cost and CO2 savings, the current fuel mix and vehicles approaching replacement.

For vehicles identified as suitable for electrification, organisations can compare potential electric replacements against the vehicle’s actual duty cycle and develop a phased transition plan around existing replacement cycles.

Morris added: “Getting the vehicle decision right is only one part of electrification. Organisations also need to understand what that means for charging, procurement and day-to-day operations.

“Starting with existing telematics data means vehicle and infrastructure decisions can be made together. That helps avoid installing too many or too few charge points and gives fleet managers a practical roadmap they can act on.”

Switch costs £6 per vehicle per month, with a minimum six-month term. For larger fleets, the platform can provide an ongoing electrification roadmap, allowing vehicles to be reviewed as they approach their replacement point.

To mark the launch, FleetEV is offering a limited number of public sector organisations a free fleet readiness assessment, including a Switch analysis of their existing fleet and a structured transition recommendation.
