First Minister Eluned Morgan MS has praised Coleg Cambria’s investment in future skills and wellbeing during a visit to its flagship £14 million health and wellbeing facility in Wrexham.
The First Minister toured the newly launched Nant building at the college’s Yale campus, which features a state-of-the-art immersive learning environment and Iâl Spa — a full industry-standard wellbeing centre complete with sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and a health food bar.
The visit also spotlighted plans for a new Welsh Language Centre for Excellence, Camu, currently under construction at the college. The facility will include expanded classrooms, high-tech learning areas, a café, and a staff ‘agile hub’, designed to support the college’s growing focus on bilingual education.
Both developments have received funding from the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.
Government-Backed Investment in Skills and Culture
“Learning environments that reflect real-world work experience better prepare students to succeed,” said the First Minister. “The Nant health and wellbeing hub is a perfect example of how Welsh Government funding is being used to equip learners with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in their careers.”
The Nant development aims to position Coleg Cambria as a leader in health and social care education, blending academic training with experiential learning in a modern, wellness-focused setting.
Building for a Bilingual Future
The college’s upcoming Camu centre represents a major commitment to Welsh language development. Once completed, it will serve as a hub for Welsh-medium education and cultural learning, aligning with national goals to increase the use of Welsh in daily and professional life.
Chief Operating Officer Steve Jackson described the developments as “a significant investment in the future of health, education, and bilingualism in Wales.”
“We were delighted to welcome the First Minister to showcase our new health education and wellbeing centre,” he said. “The Nant facility represents a major leap forward in practical learning, while Camu will further strengthen our commitment to Welsh language and culture.”
Strategic Growth for Regional Skills and Wellbeing
Vice Principal for Technical Studies, Victoria Edwards, added that both projects are designed to meet the region’s skills, wellbeing, and cultural needs.
“These developments demonstrate our ambition to deliver sector-leading facilities that not only address current industry demands but also enhance community wellbeing and cultural identity,” she said. “We’re proud to be shaping dynamic learning spaces that inspire.”
The First Minister’s visit comes as Coleg Cambria prepares to play host to the National Eisteddfod in Wrexham this August — further highlighting the institution’s role in the promotion of Welsh culture and language.
