The Heart of Wales line will see an additional daily train service from 14 December, as Transport for Wales introduces a series of timetable improvements across its network.
The new service, running at midday in both directions between Shrewsbury and Swansea via Llandrindod Wells, becomes the fifth daily train operating along the rural route.
The line connects communities from Shrewsbury to Swansea, passing through Llanelli, Llandeilo, Llandrindod and Knighton.
Funding for the expanded service was secured through the Welsh Government’s Budget deal with Welsh Liberal Democrats Leader Jane Dodds.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said the extra service would offer a boost for both residents and visitors. He said: “I’m pleased to see this service starting thanks to the funding secured in our budget deal.
“The Heart of Wales line provides a spectacular and scenic journey for tourists but is also a vital link for rural communities in Mid Wales, so this will be welcome news for residents and visitors alike.
“The Welsh Government’s £800m investment to transform rail services mean these services will see new trains connecting North and South Wales, unlocking economic growth and boosting the economy.”
The new timetable forms part of Transport for Wales’ ongoing programme to modernise services, upgrade rolling stock and improve connectivity across Wales and the borders.
