Elevate, a leading provider of full fibre business internet and networks, has launched a £7 million full fibre network across Cardiff. The project, now live, establishes Cardiff as Elevate’s sixth Hypercity and the company’s first in Wales.

This development is part of a multi-million-pound investment in Cardiff’s economic future, supported by the Welsh Government’s Local Broadband Fund. The project results from a successful partnership between Cardiff Council, Elevate, and local IT organizations. The new digital infrastructure aims to strengthen connectivity for businesses and residents while stimulating the local economy.

Elevate will offer business services under its brand, while residential services will be provided under the WeFibre brand. Elevate Wholesale will collaborate with local IT partners to support customers’ connectivity needs in the city.

Transforming connectivity in Cardiff

Elliott Mueller, CEO at Elevate®, commented on the achievement, saying, “Working in the cultural and commercial centre of Wales, businesses across the region need rapid and resilient access to the best possible digital infrastructure.”

He added, “When we were awarded the contract back in 2023, we committed to full fibre coverage across Cardiff by 2025, and we’re delighted that the work we’ve undertaken with Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government has delivered exactly that.”

Isabelle Bignall, Chief Digital Officer at Cardiff Council, emphasized the project’s positive impact, stating, “Broadband is a necessity in this digital age, and access to reliable connectivity is essential to help our local businesses flourish and our residents thrive. This project has boosted connectivity for businesses and residents, driving economic growth and enhancing daily life in Cardiff.”

The project also benefits the local community, with Elevate providing Cardiff’s Virtual School with online tuition credits to support students in completing their English and Maths GCSEs. Additionally, WeFibre’s affordable social tariff helps reduce financial barriers to connectivity, while 15 community sites now have free-for-life gigabit internet connections.

A step forward for digital Wales

Rebecca Evans, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, praised the investment, saying, “This significant investment in Cardiff’s digital infrastructure will provide thousands of businesses and residents with world-class connectivity, including many who have previously struggled with slow broadband speeds.”

The new full fibre network offers over 5,000 businesses in Cardiff dedicated internet speeds up to 10 Gbps within just 20 days, and more than 4,000 homes can now access full fibre broadband at speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

Bridging the digital divide

While some parts of Cardiff had high-speed connectivity, other areas remained underserved due to outdated copper infrastructure. Elevate’s investment addresses this digital divide by ensuring consistent, high-speed access throughout the city.

By positioning Cardiff as a leader in the digital landscape, the project aims to drive job creation, attract investment, and empower businesses and residents to connect locally and work internationally.

The launch of Cardiff’s full fibre network is part of Elevate’s broader Hypercity initiative, which aims to deliver the UK’s fastest business internet to key cities, fostering digital equity and economic growth.
