A modern electric remake of one of Britain’s most recognisable mid-century vans is set to be built in Wales, after Morris Commercial Ltd confirmed plans to establish a production facility at Bro Tathan with support from the Welsh Government.

The company will manufacture the Morris JE, a reimagined all-electric version of the classic Morris J-Type that became a familiar sight on UK roads in the 1950s.

While adopting modern engineering and a lightweight recycled carbon-fibre monocoque body, the new model retains several design features of the original and will offer a 250-mile range.

The investment will also mark a significant milestone for Wales, establishing the nation’s first dedicated electric vehicle manufacturing facility. Around 150 highly skilled jobs are expected to be created at the site.

Morris Commercial will receive support through the Welsh Government’s Economy Futures Funding programme to help establish the new operation.

The zero-emission, carbon-neutral JE is being positioned as a competitor to mid-sized vans such as the Ford Transit Custom, Vauxhall Vivaro and Volkswagen ID Buzz, ahead of a full commercial launch scheduled for late 2026.

Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, Rebecca Evans, said: “With our innovative landscape and support for low carbon concepts, Wales is a natural home for the Morris JE.

“This exciting project will benefit from the robust automotive sector and supply chain cluster we are developing here in Wales.

“Well-paid jobs will also be created for skilled workers as the company delivers this historic retro van into the electric vehicle era.”

CEO of Morris Commercial, Dr Qu Li, added: “We are excited to have our Morris JE volume production facility in Bro Tathan soon.

“This will enable us to start to deliver vehicles to long waited customers. We thank the Welsh Government for its support.”
