Housebuilder Edenstone Group has strengthened its commitment to employee welfare by appointing a dedicated mental health champion and partnering with the Lighthouse Charity to deliver wellbeing sessions across its development sites.
The Magor-based firm has expanded the remit of its health and safety manager, Sean Brill, who will now serve as the company’s first mental health champion. The move forms part of Edenstone’s broader strategy to build a supportive, proactive culture around wellbeing in what remains a high-pressure sector.
“The welfare of everyone who works for and with Edenstone is extremely important to us,” said Sean. “Whenever I visit one of our developments as part of the introductions, I always ask how everyone is and make it clear that I can be approached at any time to talk or just listen.
“We’ve recently partnered with the Lighthouse Charity who’s Make It Visible On Site initiative is promoting a more proactive, preventative approach to wellbeing across construction. They’ve visited our developments and given a real insight to our staff and contractors about emotional wellness, physical wellbeing and financial wellbeing. Their sessions were well received by all who attended.”
The Make It Visible initiative, run by the construction-focused Lighthouse Charity, brings practical advice and emotional support directly to construction workers, a group statistically at higher risk of mental health issues. Sessions have already been held at Edenstone sites in Hereford, Clehonger, Coleford, Bleadon, and Sampford Peverell, with more activity planned as the partnership develops.
Sarah Bolton, CEO of the Lighthouse Charity, welcomed the collaboration: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Edenstone for hosting our team and ensuring our message of support reaches their site operatives who may otherwise not know how or where to reach out for support. Through building a positive culture that encourages open conversations, people feel supported and able to reach out for help when they need it without fear of stigma.”
Edenstone is also building mental health awareness into its leadership and management structure. Staff across departments, including build director Mike Huddleston, technical director Richard Vine, operations director Chris Edge, and marketing manager Clare Price, have undergone mental health awareness training to ensure the company’s commitment extends from the site to the boardroom.
With a growing focus on workforce wellbeing across the construction industry, Edenstone’s initiatives reflect a growing recognition that emotional and psychological safety is as important as physical safety.
