Not that long ago, I heard a business owner say, “We’re too small to be targeted.”

I get it – cyber security feels like a big company problem. But the truth? Size doesn’t matter. Opportunity does.

We often picture cyberattacks as high-tech, high-drama events. But the reality for most businesses is more everyday – and far more manageable.

Yes, big names like M&S and the Co-op have faced recent attacks. And yes, those stories got attention. But they also serve as a reminder: digital resilience isn’t just for tech giants. It’s for all of us.

As a security lead in business, I’ve seen how small changes – a quick conversation, a checklist, a staff refresher – can make a big difference. It’s not about building a fortress. It’s about being alert, prepared, and getting the basics right.

Because cyber security isn’t just an IT issue. It’s a reputational one. A financial one. A people one.

The smartest businesses I know don’t wait for a breach. They build a culture of awareness – not just a compliance tick-box.

They treat cyber security the same way they treat health and safety – as part of everyday practice, not a once-a-year formality. It’s woven into how they train, communicate, and make decisions.

It’s not about getting everything right – it’s about building good habits that stick.

You don’t need to panic. But you do need a plan. Because if it’s M&S today, it could be any of us tomorrow.
