Llandudno’s Venue Cymru is set for a major transformation, with Conwy County Borough Council unveiling artist’s impressions that offer a first glimpse of an ambitious redesign aimed at strengthening the site’s cultural, economic and community role in North Wales.

The visuals, released ahead of a key committee meeting next week, illustrate a reimagined Venue Cymru that will serve not just as a theatre and events venue, but also as a multi-use cultural hub, combining arts, tourism, and library services under one roof.

The redevelopment forms part of a wider strategy by Conwy Council to safeguard vital public services, enhance access to arts and culture, and boost the local economy.

The proposals will be discussed by the Economy and Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday, July 2, where councillors will review the draft plans and provide recommendations to Cabinet. Also included in the report are findings from the recent Library Public Consultation and an economic impact assessment of relocating the Llandudno Library to the Venue Cymru site.

If approved, the plan would see the co-location of the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) and library services, delivering an estimated £100,000 in annual cost savings while improving accessibility and creating a more integrated visitor experience.

“Seeing the artist’s impressions is an exciting milestone for the project,” said Sarah Ecob, Conwy’s Head of Economy and Culture.

“It brings our vision to life and reinforces our commitment to creating a cultural hub that is inclusive, modern, and fit for the future.”

Venue Cymru has long played a central role in North Wales’ cultural scene, and the redevelopment aims to solidify its status as a premier events destination while expanding its community function.

“This redevelopment represents a significant investment in the cultural life of our region,” said Cllr Dilwyn Roberts, Cabinet Member for Culture.

“These proposals aim to inspire future generations and ensure a sustainable future for both the area library and Venue Cymru.”

The economic potential of the redevelopment is also being highlighted. Conwy Council believes the project will create and safeguard jobs, support the visitor economy, and make better use of public assets.

“This investment in Venue Cymru will be a welcomed boost to the local economy,” said Cllr Nigel Smith, Cabinet Member for a Sustainable Economy.

“It will improve access to arts and culture, create local employment opportunities, and help protect valued community services for residents and visitors alike.”

The draft business case for funding has already been submitted to the UK Government, with the final plans subject to councillor approval. Once progressed, the plans will go on public display at Venue Cymru, the Tourist Information Centre, and Llandudno Library in the coming months.
