Coleg Cambria launches industry-focused courses in bid to close skills gap

Coleg Cambria has unveiled a new suite of higher education courses set to launch this September, developed in partnership with Pearson, the UK’s largest awarding body. The college, which operates campuses in Deeside, Northop, Llysfasi, and Wrexham, is introducing qualifications in Hospitality, Digital Marketing and Enterprise, and Esports.
The initiative is part of Cambria’s Higher Technical Skills Strategy, aimed at improving access to higher education, boosting participation, and fostering stronger links with industry to address regional skills shortages.
“These new higher education qualifications have been carefully developed in collaboration with industry leaders to ensure graduates are equipped with the practical skills and knowledge employers are looking for,” said Emma Hurst, Dean of Access and Higher Education at Cambria.
“By aligning academic learning with real-world demands, we’re empowering students to be job-ready, innovative, and at the forefront of their sectors. This supports not only immediate career progression but also opens doors to future promotions and new professional opportunities.”
The college’s new offerings reflect a growing emphasis on technical education and employability. Cambria has positioned these qualifications as a response to increasing demand for industry-aligned training across North Wales.
Donna Pritchard, HE Partnerships and Compliance Manager, highlighted the programme’s alignment with Digital 2030 — a Welsh Government strategy focused on embedding digital literacy, confidence, and innovation across teaching and learning.
“We want Higher Technical Skills to become a priority within employer advisory boards and inform curriculum development and co-creation,” she said. “By doing so, we ensure our programmes meet the evolving demands of the local labour market.”
Pritchard also noted that the college is committed to addressing key societal challenges through education — including the promotion of the Welsh language, sustainability, and achieving net zero goals — through ongoing collaboration with Pearson and other stakeholders.
The announcement underlines Coleg Cambria’s continued focus on bridging the skills gap in North Wales and supporting economic development through tailored, employer-led education.
