Ceredigion County Council has announced that flood protection work has concluded as part of the Aberaeron Coastal Defence Scheme.

This news means the reopening of Quay Parade and the opening of the new Breakwater Walkway on 7th October.

This comes after South Beach reopened in August and now Aberaeron residents await surfacing works to be finalised around Pwll Cam which is expected to open around 11th October.

The Welsh government worked alongside Ceredigion County Council to partly fund the near two-year project which was constructed by the civil engineering company BAM UK & Ireland.

The Aberaeron Coastal Defence Scheme has made a crucial impact on the town, with 168 non-commercial and residential properties seeing a reduction in flood risks as well as the area now receiving protection from the predicted rise in sea levels.

Not only is there protection from flood and coastal erosion, but economic and social benefits arise from the scheme such as the opportunity for a rise in tourism with the Breakwater Walkway that offers a fresh visiting experience.

The new developments constructed as part of the scheme include:

  • New breakwater in the South pier
  • Refurbished breakwater in North Pier
  • Newly constructed glass and masonry flood walls
  • New flood wall along the river Aeron
  • New flood gate at Pwll Cam

Councillor Shelley Childs, Cabinet Member of Ceredigion County Council, said: “This is a significant milestone in securing Aberaeron’s stunning coastline and safeguarding the future of the town and its residents from the increasing threat posed by climate change.

“I would like to thank Bam UK & Ireland for their well-crafted build and excellent community engagement to develop the new coastal defense scheme. We are proud to support this scheme in conjunction with Welsh Government and thank residents, businesses, and visitors for their patience during the construction process.”

Ceredigion County Council proudly announced the news during Be Flood Ready campaign week, which aspires to raise awareness for the preparation of flood risks.
