Cardiff businesses are being offered a financial incentive to host paid student interns as part of a collaborative scheme launched by FOR Cardiff and Cardiff University for the fourth consecutive year.

The 2025 edition of the Paid Internship Scheme will once again offer 50% funding towards the cost of employing Cardiff University students, with all interns receiving at least the Real Living Wage of £12.60 per hour. Placements will last between four and six weeks.

A total funding pot of £12,600 has been allocated for 2025, supporting internships across a variety of sectors in the city — including creative agencies, banks, architecture firms and charities. The initiative aims to strengthen ties between the student population and the local business community while addressing recruitment needs in the city centre.

“Students make up a significant proportion of Cardiff’s population and make an enormous contribution to the economy,” said Iesha Meah, Member Relations Manager at FOR Cardiff. “Working in partnership with the Student Futures team at Cardiff University, our internship programme strengthens links between the university and local employers, helping to showcase the employment opportunities available in the city centre.”

FOR Cardiff, the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), represents more than 800 businesses and has invested over £1.5 million annually in projects and campaigns to support the local economy since 2016.

The internships are open to Cardiff University undergraduates, postgraduates, and recent graduates, and are structured as paid employment, with standard entitlements such as holiday and sick pay.

“It’s fantastic to be building on our partnership with FOR Cardiff to deliver the internship scheme again this year,” said Ffiona Griffiths, Senior Team Manager at Student Futures. “Work experience opportunities are crucial in enhancing students’ prospects when entering a competitive graduate job market, as well as enabling local employers to talent spot for future roles.”

With placements available in industries ranging from finance to film, the scheme continues to reflect the breadth of Cardiff’s economy and the diverse interests of its student body.
