This year has been a landmark one for Prostate Cymru, the Welsh charity dedicated to raising awareness of prostate cancer, funding vital research, and providing early detection services.

Relying entirely on the generosity of the public and the support of local communities, the charity has made remarkable strides in engaging men across Wales and supporting life-saving initiatives.

At the heart of this year’s achievements were the PSA Testing Days, which offered men across Wales the opportunity to undergo essential prostate checks.

With routine screening not widely available through the NHS, these events filled a critical gap, allowing thousands of men to take proactive steps in monitoring their health.

The campaign commenced on 2 March and included events in Kenfig Hill, Cowbridge, Brecon, Swansea, Cardiff, Llanelli, Narberth, Aberystwyth, Llangefni and Colwyn Bay, with over 4000 men tested.

These testing days were structured to be both accessible and community-driven, with a Specialist Nurse and Consultant on hand to provide more detailed information on the test and what would happen next in the event of a red letter.

For many participants, the events were not just about receiving a test, they were an opportunity to confront the stigma around men’s health, share experiences, and become part of a nationwide conversation about prostate awareness.

Prostate Cymru’s commitment to research was equally evident through the establishment of the Eddie Butler PhD Scholarship, named in honor of the late rugby legend and tireless advocate for men’s health.

Hosted in partnership with Cardiff University, the scholarship funds pioneering research into treatment-resistant forms of prostate cancer.

The inaugural PhD student brings cutting-edge expertise to the role, promising insights that could transform the understanding and management of the disease.

The scholarship not only continues Eddie Butler’s legacy but also reflects the charity’s long-term vision of marrying awareness with tangible scientific progress.

Community engagement reached record levels this year through Prostate Cymru’s flagship events.

Both The Five Valleys Sportive and the Cardiff Half Marathon saw unprecedented participation, with thousands taking part and raising significant funds for the charity.

The Five Valleys Sportive alone raised over £18,000, while the Cardiff Half Marathon, celebrating one of its largest-ever fields, contributed to a surge in national support.

These events are more than fundraisers; they are celebrations of community spirit, endurance, and collective commitment to tackling prostate cancer.

Through expanding access to life-saving PSA testing, supporting world-class research, and breaking records in community participation, Prostate Cymru has demonstrated the remarkable impact a charity can achieve through dedication and public support.

Operating entirely without government funding, the charity’s achievements highlight the power of collective action and the deep importance of raising awareness, supporting research, and saving lives.

This year has set a high bar, and Prostate Cymru shows no signs of slowing down in its mission to make prostate cancer a challenge that can be met head-on.
