Brains Brewery teams up with leading design studio Toward for major brand refresh

Cardiff-based Brains Brewery has announced a new strategic partnership with design studio Toward to lead a major rebranding effort, set to launch this autumn.

The collaboration marks a significant step in the brewery’s journey to modernise its image while preserving the heritage and community values that have been central to the brand since its founding in 1882 by Samuel Arthur Brain.

Toward, also based in Cardiff, is known for its work in brand development, digital strategy, and creative identity. The firm will work closely with Brains to create a refreshed visual identity that aims to strike a balance between contemporary appeal and traditional character.

The redesign will include a new logo, updated colour palette, and refreshed branding elements intended to reflect the warmth and community spirit that has defined Brains for generations.

“Brains has always been about bringing people together over great beer,” said Nick Payne, Managing Director of SA Brain. “This partnership with Toward is about reimagining how we tell that story visually – not just for now, but for the future.

“We’re incredibly excited for what’s to come and can’t wait to share it with our loyal customers and new fans alike.”

The move comes as Brains continues to evolve its position in a competitive brewing landscape, with a clear focus on revitalising its connection with both long-time supporters and new consumers.

Toward’s Managing Director Mike Jordan described the opportunity to work with the iconic Welsh brand as “very exciting news for all involved.”

“SA Brain is more than a brewery, it’s a national institution,” Jordan said. “A brand that’s etched into the hearts of many of us here in Wales and far beyond. It deserves to thrive – not only for its proud history, but for the quality of the beer that continues to flow from Dragon Brewery, still brewing in the heart of Cardiff.

“At Toward, we’ve always seen the power and potential of the Brains brand. We’re thrilled to be chosen to help shape its next chapter and to bring a new energy to something so deeply loved.

The refreshed branding is expected to roll out in the coming months, with a full launch planned for later in the year.
