Cardiff city centre is heading into what could be its most influential trading period of the year, with December forecast to play a “defining” role in overall fourth-quarter performance.
New data released by retail analytics firm Beauclair and shared by FOR Cardiff, the city centre Business Improvement District (BID), indicates that the upcoming Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend could be pivotal in unlocking pent-up consumer demand.
According to Beauclair’s October data, Cardiff recorded a -2.5% year-on-year decline in monthly sales, outperforming the -4.1% national benchmark and continuing a trend of resilience against broader economic caution.
Customer numbers and transactions dipped over the month, but two of the city centre’s strongest categories — Fashion and Food & Drink — delivered positive sales growth and are expected to lead a December uplift.
Both sectors are forecast to benefit from discount-driven activity over the Black Friday-Cyber Monday period and from Cardiff’s growing appeal as a festive shopping and leisure destination.
Beauclair’s national data suggests that UK consumers opted to delay spending in October, creating higher stakes for November’s mega-retail weekend.
“If the Black Friday to Cyber Monday period performs strongly, it could set the pace for December and help stabilise our city-centre trading after a cautious autumn,” said Carolyn Brownell, Executive Director of FOR Cardiff.
To help boost footfall during this high-value period, FOR Cardiff has launched two new festive light projection installations as part of its A Very Cardiff Christmas campaign.
Cardiff Market and Cardiff Central Station have been transformed into free large-scale visual attractions designed to encourage visitors to explore the wider city centre, shop, dine, and extend their stay.
The launch of the light projections coincided with the start of late-night Christmas shopping hours and the enhancement of FOR Cardiff’s Weekend Park & Ride service, an initiative aimed at growing footfall while supporting more sustainable travel into the city.
Brownell added: “FOR Cardiff is committed to creating reasons for people to choose the city centre during these key periods – from our new light projections to the wider A Very Cardiff Christmas programme and our Weekend Park & Ride service.
“These activations help drive footfall, support businesses, and celebrate the creativity and community that make Cardiff so special at this time of year.”
