Nearly a third of people in Wales are volunteering in their communities, according to new figures published in the National Survey for Wales.

The results, released today (27 August), reveal that 32% of respondents said they took part in voluntary activities during 2024-25, helping to deliver thousands of hours of support across the country.

The findings come alongside data showing the impact of Welsh Government investment in volunteering initiatives. Since April 2022, more than £4.6 million has been invested, enabling over 419,000 recorded volunteering hours and training opportunities for 6,710 people.

The National Survey, carried out annually with a representative sample of residents, explores a wide range of topics affecting daily life in Wales, from community engagement to internet use and health behaviours.

Among the other key results for 2024-25:

  • 96% of people said they use the internet, up from 93% in 2022-23.
  • 42% of workers reported working remotely for some or all of their hours, compared with 34% in 2022-23.
  • 94% of people reported at least two healthy behaviours, including not smoking, not drinking above guidelines, maintaining a healthy weight, eating five portions of fruit or vegetables a day, and being physically active.

Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Welsh Language, Mark Drakeford, said the survey results provide crucial evidence for shaping future policies.

He said: “These survey findings give us valuable evidence about what matters most to people. We’ll use these insights to guide our policies and ensure our decisions reflect the real experiences of Welsh communities.”

The figures highlight the continued importance of volunteering in strengthening community life across Wales, while also reflecting wider shifts in work patterns, digital connectivity, and health behaviours.
