Ambition North Wales has unveiled a £24.6 million Clean Energy Fund to accelerate the region’s transition to a low-carbon economy, offering vital financial backing for clean energy and decarbonisation projects over the next five years.

Launched as part of the North Wales Growth Deal, the fund is aimed at supporting businesses and voluntary-sector organisations that are leading the charge in energy innovation. It is expected to unlock over £100 million in investment for the region, create 150 new jobs, and reduce carbon emissions by up to 125,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

The fund is structured around two primary sub-funds for North Wales-based organisations:

  • A voluntary sector sub-fund, delivered by WCVA, tailored for charities, social enterprises, and community-led clean energy initiatives.
  • A private sector sub-fund, administered by UMi, aimed at supporting businesses with decarbonisation or renewable energy generation projects.

A third reserve fund is also available to consider applications from other organisations or alternative funding models that fall outside the two main streams.

Projects funded under the initiative will focus on smart energy solutions such as energy storage, efficiency improvements, carbon reduction technologies, and renewable energy generation.

The fund was officially launched at a stakeholder event hosted at Coleg Llandrillo’s Engineering Centre in Rhyl, a fitting venue given its status as a regional hub for renewable energy skills development and training.

Leaders behind the initiative say the fund will be key to both meeting climate goals and unlocking economic opportunities across North Wales.
