A £10 million expansion of the Llantrisant Recycling Centre has been given the go-ahead by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Planning Committee, unlocking one of the most significant investments in the area’s circular economy in recent years.
The scheme, led by Welsh civil engineering and waste management company Prichard’s, will transform the existing facility with a new sound-insulated recycling building, upgraded public recycling areas, extensive landscaping and more than 80 new trees.
The development also integrates a suite of sustainability measures, including solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting systems and SuDS-compliant drainage.
The project consolidates existing planning permissions on the site and introduces stronger environmental controls designed to reduce emissions, manage noise and improve efficiency.
Construction is expected to commence in 2026, a year that marks the company’s 30th anniversary — a milestone the business intends to celebrate with major capital investment.
Tom Prichard, Managing Director of Prichard Holdings Ltd., said: “We’re extremely proud to have secured consent for this landmark development in our 30th year.
“This is a major investment in the future of sustainable waste management in RCT and reflects our long-standing commitment to doing things properly for our community, our workforce and the environment.
“We’re grateful to everyone who has supported the application and look forward to getting work underway next year.”
Founded in 1995, Prichard’s has grown into one of Wales’ most established construction and waste management businesses.
It now employs more than 400 people across South Wales, with operations spanning civil engineering, waste recycling, plant hire and haulage. The company is recognised as a significant contributor to the regional economy, not only through direct employment but also through its supply chains and ongoing community investment activity.
The planning application was prepared by Highlight Planning, the Cardiff-based consultancy that recently secured the title of RTPI Cymru Small Planning Consultancy of the Year.
The firm has worked with Prichard’s over an extended period to refine the development plans and navigate the regulatory process.
Joe Ayoubkhani, Director at Highlight Planning, said: “This is a brilliant result for an expanding company with deep roots in RCT. We’ve worked closely with officers and key stakeholders to shape a scheme that delivers real environmental, operational and visual improvements.
“It’s great to see such a forward-thinking project come forward, and we’re proud to have helped deliver it.”
