A landmark £10 million agriculture innovation centre has officially opened at Coleg Cambria Llysfasi, marking a major investment in land-based education in North Wales.

The cutting-edge Hwb Arloesi (Innovation Hub) was unveiled during a launch event that also celebrated top-performing students with the college’s Learner of the Year Awards. The two-storey, carbon-neutral facility was supported by over £5.9 million in funding from the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.

Built by Wrexham-based Read Construction, the new complex features a wide range of modern amenities, including a library, classrooms, science labs, a wellbeing hub, meeting rooms, a coffee shop, a climbing wall, an atrium, and dedicated spaces for both Further and Higher Education (FE and HE) learners.

Elin Roberts, Head of Llysfasi, praised the new development: “We’re thrilled to officially launch Hwb Arloesi and want to thank everyone for joining us today.

This fantastic new facility has already made a great impression on both students and staff. From cutting-edge equipment to inspiring meeting rooms, academic spaces, and workshops, every corner of the building has been thoughtfully designed to support innovation and learning.”

She added: “There’s never been a better time to choose Coleg Cambria for the next stage in your academic or professional journey in the farming and agriculture sector.”

The launch event featured guest speaker Abi Reader, winner of the Farming Hero: Flag for British Agriculture award at the 2024 British Farming Awards. She was joined by Bryan Williams, former Head of Agriculture at Llysfasi College, to formally open the building.

The occasion also celebrated student excellence with the college’s Learner of the Year Awards, recognising top achievers across land-based programmes:

  • Welsh Studies Award – Tomos Morris
  • Learner of the Year (Land-Based) – Nichola Wright
  • Foundation Skills in Land-Based Studies – Best Endeavour – Charlie Hessian
  • Livery Company of Wales Award – Rhys Pinder
  • Student of the Year (Tilhill Diploma) – Gabriella Francis
  • Student of the Year (Royal Forestry Society) – Matthew Whitehead
  • Learners of the Year (Skills) – Lottie Bailey and Abi Packer

The Hwb Arloesi centre positions Coleg Cambria Llysfasi as a leading hub for agricultural innovation, sustainability, and future-focused skills development in Wales and beyond.
