A new pilot scheme offering £1 bus fares to young people has been launched across Wales, with the aim of making travel more affordable and boosting public transport use.
From Monday 1st September, 16–21-year-olds can access the reduced fares by applying for a free mytravelpass. The one-year initiative is designed to help young people connect with education, employment, and social opportunities at a lower cost.
Alongside the £1 single fare, an unlimited day ticket is available for £3. The discounted fares can be bought directly from drivers or via operators’ apps, with users required to register their mytravelpass. They are also valid on cross-border services as long as the journey begins or ends in Wales.
Lee Robinson, Executive Director for Regional Transport and Integration at Transport for Wales, said: “This pilot scheme, is a significant step towards making public transport more affordable for young people in Wales. By reducing fares to just £1, we hope to encourage more young people to choose the bus.”
The programme will expand in November to include children aged 5–15, extending the benefit to families and younger passengers. Officials hope this will ease school travel costs and encourage long-term bus use.
The pilot will be closely monitored over the next year, with uptake and impact feeding into wider transport policy. If successful, the initiative could pave the way for lasting changes in bus fares across Wales.
